Jewellery Care

Precious metals and stones require care to keep them pristine and lasting a lifetime. Firstly, let me tell you about the materials I use in my pieces, and then how you can look after them best.

What metals are the pieces made of?

All of the metals used in my products are either sterling silver or gold filled.

Sterling Silver is a metal alloy, meaning it's made of a combination of metals. Sterling Silver, also known as 925 Silver, is made of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% alloy, usually copper or zinc.

I also use 14/20K gold-filled metals. Gold filled metals have a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal, usually jeweler's brass. The layer of gold is thicker than that on gold plated pieces, and therefore is far more durable and suited for everyday wear.

How do I care for the pieces?

Sterling silver can tarnish (turn a darker colour) if left out in the open when not worn. Certain chemicals in the air or on your skin can also cause tarnish. This is totally normal for sterling silver, and is easily cleaned with silver polish. Avoid tarnish by putting your jewellery on after perfumes/lotions, and keeping them in an airtight bag/box when not being worn.

For my gold-filled pieces, tarnish is uncommon. However, try to avoid wearing it in pools, hot tubs, or while at the gym. Put your jewellery on after applying lotion, sunscreen, cosmetics and perfumes, and give them a light clean if any of this is unavoidable. Clean with gentle dish soap and water, or gold-filled cleaner.

What about the stones?

Pearls, sea glass, and kyanite are considered soft stones, so you should avoid banging them around so they don't chip or lose luster. They are safe to wear in the sea and pools but shouldn't be left to soak in water for an extended period of time.Â
